Verdict
The best-looking artifact here and the one that fails the actual sentence. The bicycle is the most complete in the test — spoked wheels, chainring, both cranks, self-levelling pedals, chain, rear rack, front basket with a fish — and the machine runs: wheels turn 123° per 800 ms, the chainring and cranks turn 52°, the pedals counter-rotate to stay flat, two cloud layers and a sun path drift past. But the pelican is not on it. At 1440×900 the rider group's bounding box starts at y = −102, so its head is cropped by its own canvas for the entire loop, and its feet cycle between y 301 and 386 while the real pedals sit between y 461 and 517: phantom pedalling roughly 130 px above the bicycle. The bird soars alongside a riderless bike. The control set is the richest of the ten — pause, four speeds, a reverse toggle, an odometer that counts whole kilometres, and a reduced-motion path that drops the speed to 0.5×.
What works
- Best art direction in the set: dusk palette, layered dunes, editorial typography, odometer and control bar.
- Most complete bicycle: spoked wheels, chainring, cranks, self-levelling pedals, chain, rack and basket.
- A real control panel — pause, 0.5× to 3×, reverse — and every drivetrain part actually animates from one clock.
What breaks
- The pelican never sits on the saddle: it flies above the bike for the whole loop.
- Feet pedal empty air 120–160 px above the pedals, so the motion chain is disconnected.
- The rider's head is outside the SVG viewBox at common window sizes, and the odometer counts kilometres for a bike nobody is sitting on.
